Shut In is the story of Lily McFlanzen, a young woman struggling with bipolar disorder. It follows her thoughts, commentary, and anxieties about day to day life as she learns to cope with her illness after a suicide attempt.
AUTHOR’S WARNING: Contains mature content and graphic imagery depicting self-harm and an attempted suicide. Basically, read at your own risk. The humor in this comic is pretty dark, and it centers around some pretty serious things. It is in no way intended to make fun of or trivialize these topics. I simply hope that it sheds some light on the reality of living with a mental illness as opposed to brushing it under a rug of movie stereotypes and stigmas. As Lily says herself, this is a story about healing after a traumatic event. It’s not about dying. It’s about learning how to live.
